SACRAMENTO – Senate Republican Leader Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) has delivered two letters to Governor Newsom urging him to veto Assembly Bill 520 and Assembly Bill 1482. AB 520 will drive the cost of housing construction up and will benefit labor unions at the expense of hardworking Californians. Known as an expansion of rent control, AB 1482 will slow future housing construction in California. Both bills will further worsen California’s housing crisis and unfortunately, legislative Democrats passed them on a party line vote.
Senate Republican Leader Shannon Grove issued the following statement:
“Some California builders have already paid up to $100,000 in permits and waited months, if not years, before they pound their first nail. AB 520 will force employers to pay a prevailing wage on any housing development that receives minimal public subsidy which in turn will increase the cost of a home. Additionally, AB 1482 is deeply flawed and implementing rent control will further stifle housing development.
“The majority party’s housing legislation will only hurt California’s families down the road. California needs to get serious about tackling the housing crisis instead of creating additional burdens that increase the costs of constructing new homes.
“Senate Republicans are committed to working to find commonsense solutions such as comprehensive regulatory reform. And for these reasons, I urge the governor to veto both these bad bills. California deserves better,” said Senate Republican Leader Shannon Grove.
