Senate Republicans Advocate for Clean Drinking Water for Disadvantaged Communities

SACRAMENTO – Today, members of the California Senate Republican Caucus voted in support of Senate Bill 200 which creates the Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund that will provide funding to communities that lack access to clean drinking water. SB 200 has an urgency clause which means the legislation will immediately become law once Governor Newsom signs the bill.

SB 200 seeks to:

  • Provide funding to communities that lack access to clean drinking water.
  • Annually appropriate $130 million from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) to the fund created by this bill.
  • Specify that the bill does not impose a tax or fee.

Senate Republican Leader Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) issued the following statement:

“It is important to provide clean drinking water to California families, especially those who live in rural communities and do not readily have access to it. We must protect our families in disadvantaged communities which is why Senate Republicans supported this effort and voted in favor of SB 200.

“With a $22 billion surplus, there was no reason to raise taxes on Californians to pay for these needed projects. This commonsense legislation is not a tax or fee which means it helps our disadvantaged communities rather than hurting them,” said Senate Republican Leader Shannon Grove.
