Under intense public pressure from the California Senate Republican Caucus and public safety organizations, Governor Newsom has vetoed Senate Bill 57 (Wiener), a measure that would have created “safe” drug injection centers in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland.
Senate Republican Leader Scott Wilk (R-Santa Clarita) described this measure as “one of the most dangerous pieces of legislation” to reach the governor’s desk for his signature or veto.
All Senate Republicans signed a formal letter urging Governor Newsom to veto the bill, and called for the public to join in advocating against the measure.
“Glad to see the governor veto this. People struggling with addiction need help, not a legal place to shoot up,” said Wilk. “I look forward to working with the governor to convince Democrats in the legislature that a compassionate approach to addiction is better done through medical and mental health treatments.”
