Disability Insurance:

  • Why: If you are unable to work due to medical quarantine or illness related to COVID-19 that has been certified by a medical professional.
  • What: Short-term income replacement benefits to eligible workers who have full or partial loss of wages due to a non-work related illness.
  • Benefits: 60-70 percent of your wages depending on income with a minimum benefit of $50 per week and a maximum benefit of $1,300 per week for up to 52 weeks.

Paid Family Leave:

  • Why: If you are unable to work due to taking care of an ill or quarantined family member with COVID-19 that has been certified by a medical professional.
  • What: Up to six weeks of benefit payments to eligible workers who have full or partial loss of wages because they need time off work to care for a seriously ill family member.
  • Benefits: 60-70 percent of wages (depending on income) with a minimum benefit of $50 per week to a maximum benefit of $1,300 per week for up to 6 weeks.

Unemployment Insurance:

  • Why: If you have lost your job or had reduced hours for reasons related to COVID-19, including not being able to work because of school closures.
  • What: Partial wage replacement benefits for workers who lose their job through no fault of their own.
  • Benefits: Benefits range from a minimum of $40 per week to a maximum of $450 per week for up to 26 weeks.

Paid Sick Leave:

  • Why: If you are absent due to illness or preventative care such as quarantine because of exposure to COVID-19.
  • What: Paid Sick Leave benefits provided by your employer under California law.
  • Benefits: Paid to you at your regular rate of pay or an average based on the past 90 days. Benefit minimum is 24 hours for three days for a calendar year.

Workers' Compensation:

  • Why: If you are unable to do your usual job because you were exposed to and contracted COVID-19 during the regular course of your work.
  • What: Benefits include temporary disability (TD) payments, which begin when your doctor says you can't do your usual work for more than three days or you are hospitalized overnight. You may be eligible to receive benefits for you to 104 weeks and benefits cease when you either return to work, your doctor releases you for work, or your doctor says your illness has improved as much as it can.
  • Benefits: Benefits usually pay two-thirds of the gross wages you lose while you are recovering from a work-related illness or injury. Eligible employees are entitled to medical treatment and additional payments if a doctor determines you suffered a permanent disability because of the illness.
